Election Day's just around the corner. What's next after the ballots are counted?

Will there again be 67 members of the DFL and Republican parties in the 2027-2028 legislative biennium? Will one side of the aisle be in the majority?

Hopefully, we’ll know the answer to those principal questions after Tuesday’s election results are known.

Then what?

Myriad questions abound about who, what and when as the incoming majority party — or both — begins to get the House in order before members convene on Jan. 12, 2027.

While timelines are fluid, be assured that nonpartisan House Public Information Services aims to provide updated information on the House website, via our free Session Daily newsletter (sign up here), and our @MNHouseInfo social media channels.

In the meantime, here’s answers to some frequently asked questions.

Who won the election for my House and Senate district? Any recounts?

After the polls close at 8 p.m. on Election Day, the Office of the Secretary of State will begin updating results at https://www.sos.mn.gov/elections-voting/election-results. Results are unofficial until certified by the State Canvassing Board. That meeting is scheduled for Nov. 19.

Potential recount information is available at: https://www.sos.mn.gov/elections-voting/how-elections-work/recounts.

The Secretary of State’s Election Center is at 651-215-1440 or 877-600-8683.

Senate Information is at 651-296-0504 or 888-234-1112.

Is there a place where member information will be summarized in one place?

Nonpartisan House Public Information Services staff aim to have the Member Guide 2027-28 and a member-elect roster available on the House website by the end of the day Wednesday, Nov. 4. This easily printable member guide will continue to be updated as we learn more information regarding the House heading into — and during — the 2027 legislative session.

How can I get in touch with my new representative?

The phone number stays with the district; however, because current members serve until January, phone numbers for members-elect is that of their caucus until they are sworn in:

DFL – 651-297-9001

Republican – 651-297-9010

As with current members, the mailing address for members-elect is either Second Floor (Republican) or Fifth Floor (DFL) Centennial Office Building.

Rep. John Doe

Second (or Fifth) Floor, Centennial Office Building

658 Cedar St., St. Paul, MN 55155

Email information, including when members-elect will have access to their account and email addresses go live, is yet to be determined.

When will caucuses name their 2027-2028 leaders?

If tradition holds, it should be Thursday or Friday after the election.

When will committee information (including chairs and members) be made?

That is up to the incoming majority caucus.

We do not know of a timeframe, but, again, nonpartisan House Public Information Services will post information on the House website (and update the Member Guide 2027-28) once it becomes publicly available.

Generally, committee structure and chairs are named in mid- to late-November with committee membership probably in mid-December.

When can I get a copy of the Green Book?

We expect the Members Directory — better known as the Green Book — to be ready for distribution in the middle of February. Please check back at that time. We do not maintain a list to reserve books.

How about the Red Book?

The Official Directory of the Minnesota Legislature will likely be published late in 2027 or early 2028.

When must the 2027 session end?

Legislators must complete their work by May 17.
